Choosing an Outdoor Furniture Fabric

Did you know that outdoor fabric differs from that used indoors? Cushions and other soft furnishings used outdoors take more of a beating, so need to be more hard-wearing. When choosing an outdoor fabric, ask yourself whether the material is:

  • Fade-resistant
  • Sun-resistant
  • Mould or mildew resistant
  • Weatherproof or weather-resistant
  • Machine washable.

All our cushions are expertly upholstered from durable tightly woven fabrics by our expert team. We use high density foam padded with Dacron® for added protection, and all cushions have piping and zips to make removing covers for washing easy. The result is quality cushions made for comfort, and which will stand the test of time.

Outdoor fabric with Sunbrella®

Sunbrella® could be described as the ultimate in outdoor, sun-resistant fabric – a perfect choice for the African climate. Developed over fifty years ago for applications in the boating industry, Sunbrella® is not only a high performance fabric, but the epitome of style, too, referencing the very latest décor trends. Alifurn is proud to be associated with this exclusive brand name, designed by the style team at Dickson Constant.

Sunbrella® is a new-generation acrylic fibre which is 100% solution-dyed – rather than being added afterwards like most other fabrics, the colour pigments are incorporated during the manufacturing process. This results in a colour fast fabric that’s fade-resistant even after hours of sun exposure. But that’s not all – Sunbrella®’s CleanGard® treatment makes the fabric water-repellent and stain-resistant, and helps the fabrics withstand all sorts of inclement weather, as well as salty water and chlorine – making it a perfect seaside or poolside fabric!

Sunbrella® fabrics are also non-hazardous and carry the Oeko-Tex label, an environmentally-friendly label awarded by a leading Austrian research institute.

The Cedarbrook Patio Collection

Acrylic is an ideal fabric for outdoor applications, since its naturally resistant to rotting and mildew, as well as to mild acids and alkalines. The fabric used in the Cedarbrook Collection is treated with Teflon® fabric protector, which acts both as a fungicide to protect the fabric from mildew and mould, and as a water and oil repellent. Remember, though, that mould and mildew can still grow on soiling, so all fabrics should be washed periodically at 40°C. Mild mould and mildew can be removed with a mild bleach solution, without adverse effects on the integrity or colour of the fabric.
