About Our Fibre-Cane
What is Fibre-Cane Furniture
Fibre-cane has the appearance of rattan or wicker furniture, but unlike the latter is able to withstand exposure to the elements – rain or shine.
The fibre-cane which Alifurn uses in the manufacture of its outdoor furniture is 100% synthetic high density polyethylene – we’ve added two UV stabilisers to this plastic to prevent fading and cracking, rendering it completely weatherproof. Rather than merely being applied to the surface of the material, high quality colour pigments are added during the extrusion process, achieving rich and long-lasting colours.
Natural cane versus synthetic cane furniture
Synthetic fibre-cane was originally developed in response to the diminishing resources of natural cane and rattan, and has been developed to look and work just like the natural product, which is obtained largely from a type of climbing palm found in tropical African and South East Asian countries. Unfortunately, says the World Wildlife Fund, the way natural rattan is harvested and processed needs to improve to ensure this natural resource doesn’t disappear altogether. By choosing poly-rattan, or fibre-cane furniture, you’ll be making a positive contribution to the environment, by helping lessen the pressure on the world’s remaining rattan forests. That’s not the only benefits to fibre-cane – it’s also:
- Long-lasting and weather-resistant, unlike its natural counterpart which must be covered to protect it from the elements
- Low maintenance – it’s mould-resistant and easy to clean
